Space Clearing - Saging Your Space
What is Space Clearing or Saging
Space clearing or saging is literally the movement of energy and has been done for centuries. It's purpose is to get rid of stagnant energy that may be hanging around, clearing the space on an energetic level. It is an ancient art practiced daily in some cultures and occurs all over the world in multiple countries. There is never just one way to do things and this is no different. There are many ways and numerous material used for space clearing. If you have ever pulled back a curtain or opened a window to let in light and fresh air, that is a form of space clearing.
Why Clear or Sage
Every space holds energy. Even though you can’t see it, you’ve probably sensed it. For example, you may have walked into a room that may have looked beautiful, but somehow just didn’t feel right. Or have you been in a space that was not the best decor and maybe not have appealed to you, but you immediately felt good and comfortable. In both instances, you were likely tuning into the energy of the space. There are many commonly used expressions that indicate we intuitively understand that buildings, places and things can have a vibration or a feel. We need to "clear the air", "You can cut the tension with a knife", "Their anger was palpable", "I could feel them shooting daggers at my back", are all good examples of our ability to feel energy.
The reason to clear your space is a simple one. Just as you would clean your house of dirt and dust because it has built up on a physical level, energy builds up on an energetic level. Whenever there are very emotional happenings, arguments, divorce, sadness, or anger, those energies linger. Rooms can hold the energy of all the events, emotions, people, and activities that have taken place in the space—in order to have a fresh start, and create more harmony and peace in our surroundings, it can be helpful to clear the energy once in awhile.
Most people would agree that a common and essential aspect of caring for our homes is cleaning away dust and dirt. No one would argue that letting dirt and clutter accumulate over time negatively affects our health and dampens our spirits. But also detrimental to a healthy home is built-up, stagnant energy. Stagnant energy can prevent us from reaching our full potential by holding past issues, emotions, and old patterns that no longer serve us.
And it is not just emotions or events that can stagnate our energy. Having a space filled with clutter or items that are no longer being used stagnates energy as well. When our space is so full of stuff the energy cannot move, that energy becomes dull and lifeless. A great way to get energy moving is to clear away the clutter. This not only helps the energy, it helps your health and mind as well. A cluttered space leads to a cluttered mind and cluttered energy. Clear the clutter - Clear the Mind, Body and Home. Let's get that energy moving.
When to Clear or Sage
A good time to clear energy is...
before moving into a new space,
after removing a large amount of clutter
after a construction project is complete,
after an illness or argument,
during or after any major life event, such as a divorce or a loss of job,
anytime you feel stuck or down,
when your space simply doesn’t feel right.
You can also perform an energy clearing when you are simply trying to bring in more positive energy.
Generally, it is recommended to do a thorough space clearing session at least once a year in your home. How often completely depends on what you have going on in your life. It is also recommended to clear the space in your business as well. As long as there are people using the space, it is a space that could and should be cleared.
What to Expect
Because I clear space intuitively, I don't always do things the same way every time. I usually use a combination of traditional saging and sound along with prayer and intention but will also include a little Feng Shui to keep the energy of the space moving. Saging requires a sage stick to be lit and then blown out so it smokes. It is the smoke that cleanses. While I typically use sage, there are numerous other techniques that can also be effective if smoke is something that is not tolerated well.
I ask that whoever is in the space be saged (cleansed), along with myself before starting. I do like my clients to participate where ever possible as it gives them a feeling of power or inclusion with the situation. There are usually suggestions of ways to protect the "good" energy or block "negative" energy from the space and it is also common for suggestions of items to remove or add to increase the energy flow.
Some techniques that are used:
burning incense or smudge sticks,
Palo Santo
sprinkling water and salt,
ringing bells and striking gongs,
your intention,
burning candles
essential oils,
crystals,
Reiki,
Feng Shui,
prayer,
The average clearing takes about two hours.
Most people feel a sense of well being or calmness once the process is complete. Their space generally feels lighter.
