Emotional Freedom Technique (Tapping) restores the body's balance, and negative emotions are conquered.
WHAT IS TAPPING?
Also known as Tapping, the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is a combination of talk therapy and stimulation of acupressure points. Have you ever seen someone self-soothe by rubbing their forehead, wringing their hands or rubbing the back of their neck? And of course, we pat babies to soothe them when they are upset. Touch is comforting. We’re wired for it. That is the same principle used in Tapping. Tapping is a gentle form of soothing touch. There are some key points where the flow of the body’s energy is more “accessible.” Such points were discovered and documented a long time ago. In fact, the Chinese have been stimulating these points through touch (acupressure) and needles (acupuncture) for over 5000 years! It's also from traditional Chinese medicine that we learned about the flow of vital energy (chi or qi) along meridian pathways. Since the tapping points are found on these meridians, EFT or Energy Tapping is also known as Meridian Tapping.
Your body is more powerful than you can imagine.... filled with life, energy and a compelling ability for self-healing. With Tapping, you can take control of that power.
The benefits of tapping on the meridian acu-points has been extensively documented. Experience shows that tapping can shift our beliefs and thoughts quickly and with much less pain than conventional therapies. There are lots of theories on how and why it works, but no one can say for sure. (We just see the positive results.) Scientific studies do show that the electrical resistance in the skin at the meridian acu-points is much lower than the rest of the body. Brain wave studies show energy tapping affects the deep subconscious. However it works, tapping seems to activate our body's innate self-healing intelligence and allows us to transform our lives. Case histories abound showing astounding changes in anxieties, fears, and phobias.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
The amygdala is the part of the brain that detects threats, so it’s involved in all anxiety disorders. It’s also involved with other emotions, any time we feel threatened. It’s really the heart of the limbic system which controls your emotions. Certain points on your body reduce arousal in the amygdala.
The protocol in EFT is to bring to mind the stressful event, or a trigger that causes the threat reaction in the person. The person brings to mind what it is that is frightening, or causing an inappropriate response that is a phobia where there’s a fear of something that in fact is not really a danger, or a person that they interact with that they have strong anxiety about or anger towards, but it’s irrational. You bring that to mind and that puts the amygdala into a stress response. At the same time, you tap on these points on the body, these acupressure points, that are sensitive to creating an electromagnetic signal that goes, as it turns out, through the body’s connective tissue, to the areas of the brain that control threat, and they give the message to decrease the arousal. So the brain is getting opposing messages.
It is getting a message to increase the threat because that’s what the image does, and it’s getting the message to decrease arousal because that’s what the tapping does. After a little bit of time, within minutes usually, the message to decrease the arousal dominates because nothing bad is happening. The events that caused the threat are no longer in play, so now the person is able to hold the image of the memory or of the trigger and there is no arousal. It’s just gone. You try to get them to go into it, and if there is any you tap that down. Then there is no emotional response to what may have been a horrible scene. So the person still has a memory, but their brain is not going into a whole sequence that involves pumping cortisol through the system and adrenaline, etc. So that becomes the new normal. Now you can think of that memory or you can think of the triggers or you can think of the person that was making you anxious or making you angry with calmness. That’s what I think is really unique and important acupuncture points in terms of energy psychology, and EFT in particular.
"Emotion - Energy in motion" All negative emotions are a disruption of the body's energy system. Physical pain and disease are intricately connected to negative emotions. Health problems create feedback, physical symptoms cause emotional distress, and unresolved emotional problems manifest themselves through physical symptoms. So the body's health must be approached as a whole. You cannot treat the symptoms without addressing the cause and vise-versa.
Mend the negative emotions and physical symptoms that stem from the energy disruption disappear. Tapping restores the body's energy balance and negative emotions are conquered.
Where Did Energy Tapping Come From?
Energy Tapping was the result of someone saying, “I think this can be done better.” Like all great inventions, it started with a student or practitioner wanting to improve what they already had so they began experimenting. In the 1960’s and 70’s, starting with George Goodheart, a Chiropractor, who developed muscle testing, and John Diamond, a psychiatrist, expanded Goodheart’s teachings to integrate aspects of psychiatry. EFT was further refined in the 80’s and 90’s by Roger Callahan, a psychologist (Thought Field Therapy) and student of Goodheart, Gary Craig, a Stanford-trained Engineer who developed the Emotional Freedom Technique, student of Callahan, Patricia Carrington, a psychologist and student of Callahan, Donna Eden, a pioneer in Energy Medicine, Carol Look, a psychotherapist, and many others. The benefits of tapping on the meridian acupoints has been extensively documented. Case histories abound showing astounding changes in anxieties, fears, and phobias. Experience shows that tapping can shift our beliefs and thoughts quickly and with much less pain than conventional therapies.
Why Tap with an EFT Practitioner
Sandra discovered Tapping in 2013 by Divine intervention, or accident if you’d prefer. “I don’t believe in accidents. Everything happens for a reason, we just don’t always know what that reason is.” And she’s been using it ever since. When she decided to become certified, the biggest surprise was all she didn’t know after several years and hundreds of hours of audio and video. It is a learned skill, and once you have it, you can absolutely use it on your own and any good practitioner would encourage that. And there are an abundance of sites teaching you how to do it yourself. So why use a professional?
1. A professional hears things differently than you hear them. The ability to tune into the problem is the most important factor for success. Things you may dismiss from your mind are actually things that could produce the most benefit.
2. A professional will ask different questions. Questions you may not have thought to ask are now being brought to light for exploration. A different perspective or angle. Even experienced EFT practitioners tap with each other from time to time.
3. There is power in numbers. Like all energy work, the effect is increased when there is more than one person participating. Liken it to rolling a boulder up a hill. Someone else may know a better slope to roll that boulder up. Many hands make light work and sometimes having someone else do the tapping on us can make all the difference.
4. A professional should have knowledge that may take lots of time to uncover on your own. There are many techniques and tapping points and a professional should be able to guide you to the best fit for you.
5. Often times when we are under stress we are incapable of knowing how to move ahead. A trained EFT Practitioner can help prioritize the best place to start. There are also gentle approaches to use that don’t re-traumatize the client.
6. It can be very healing to have someone else see the beauty in us that we cannot see in ourselves. And simply to know we are not alone.
7. And finally, you may just want the help. Not everyone wants to become proficient in EFT, there are those who just want to have the benefit of someone else’s expertise and get their problem solved.
